Sacred Rivers Horse Trek

Check availability

Mongolia lies at the heart of Asia, on the balance between the ‘East’ of China, and the vast wilderness of Siberian Russia. This huge, sparsely populated land encompasses a fabulous array of pristine landscapes and a nomadic people whose lives are in many ways unchanged from the days of Genghis Khan and the mighty Mongol Empire.

This wonderful horse trekking trip takes you to the Khan Khentii mountain range, one of the biggest and the most beautiful mountains of Mongolia, the sacred Tuul and the Herlen rivers, part of the Great Mongolian steppes and the Gun-Galuut nature reserve. While trekking you will have the opportunities to visit local families and taste their renowned milky tea. At the end of the trip you will enjoy a wonderful rest in the serene Gun-Galuut – heaven for wildlife lovers.

Accommodation on Selena Travel tours
Ulaanbaatar: Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia has many hotels ranging from basic 1* to high-end 5*. Some international hotel chains have opened such as Kempinski, Ramada, and Best Western to name a few. Some of Selena Travel Mongolia tours do not include hotel accommodation in Ulaanbaatar, where clients are advised to take care of their own accommodation in Ulaanbaatar. Please refer to your tour program (Included services and Exclusions section) for more details.
Your Selena Travel advisor is happy to assist you with hotel booking on your request. Below you will find some suggested hotels in Ulaanbaatar:
  • Best Western Gobi Kelso ***
  • Springs hotel ***
  • Ramada hotel ****
  • Kempinski Khan Palace ****
  • Best Western Premier *****

Outside Ulaanbaatar:
Please take in mind that traveling in the countryside of Mongolia is often tough, a trip is conducted in remote areas where there’s no hotel and paved roads exist.

Outside of Ulaanbaatar, tourist Ger camps are the best accommodation for travelers. A Ger is Mongolian traditional dwelling made of felt layers and wooden construction, and the Mongols have lived in Gers since the time immemorial. Tourist Ger camps offer comfortable Gers with 1-4 beds with good bedding, and also have western style showers and WCs (mostly shared). A few Ger camps offer en-suite Gers at additional charge (please ask your Selena Travel advisor for this). Due to remoteness some tourist Ger camps may not excel in service, so travelers may not always expect high pressure showers, bubble baths or gourmet food etc.
Food on Selena Travel tours
During your tour in Mongolia you will be eating in good restaurants in Ulaanbaatar, we have a great variety in restaurants in the capital city. Once you are outside the capital, Ger restaurants in Ger camps and local cafes in the small towns and villages will be the places where you will be eating. Ger restaurants often have set menu, but their food is usually very good (Ger camps provide mostly continental breakfast, lunches consist of salad, soup, main course and dessert, whilst, dinners are usually salad, main course and dessert).
During your longer driving days you will take packed lunch from Ger camps (often vegetable salad, main course such as fried chicken/noodles/dumplings and a chocolate bar etc). Vegetarians are well taken care of both in Ulaanbaatar restaurants and tourist Ger camps.
Luggage allowance on Selena Travel tours
When you travelling overland in a vehicle (minivan & jeep), it would be suitable if you have 20kg luggage per person (max). However, please kindly note that domestic flight luggage allowance per person is 15 kg (10 kg for the check in luggage and 5 for the carry on luggage). For 1kg extra luggage you pay US$2 - 5.

The beautiful valley in summer is often dotted with traditional Mongolian gers and offers picturesque sceneries.

  • Jun 15, 2011. Horse Trekking from Tuul to Kherlen Just to let you know that we had a wonderful time during the trip. It was a very good horse trekking tour of getting a taste of the nomads' lifestyle, the Mongolian horses, the horse rides and the beautiful landscape. Complemented by the close attention given by Dorjo the tour guide, the horseman, the medical student cook and the retired army leutenant driver, I left Mongolia fully satisfied. Terelj National Park was simply stunning, Gun-Galuut a sunset was captivating. The refreshing air was filled with nothing but sounds of bird chirping, horses galloping and sheep baaing. Patches of the green land were flooded with arrays of colorful flowers. To describe the enjoyment of the trip and the beauty of Mongolia in such a short passage does not do justice to Chinggis Khan's homeland. The next best thing is to share my precious photos with others in order to feel my experience. Hope to return to the Land of blue skies soon.

May 15, 2007. Horse Trekking from Tuul to Kherlen Just a note to thank you for the best trip ever. Mongolia horse trips offer a special blend of adventure and a view to a way of life not found anywhere else. However the biggest thing was the people from Selena we went with. They could not have been better, tears from laughing too much at dinner and tears at the airport leaving these wonderful people. Can’t guarantee every Selena team will be like ours but Enkhmunkh, Erdenebat, Usukhbayer, and Enkhmunkh, the best ever.

  • Aug 05, 2009. Horse Trekking from Tuul to Kherlen I have been back from Mongolia for a month and have spent so much time looking through the photographs again and again… My friend, Leng, and myself really want to thank Selena Travel for giving us such memorable experiences. Before we set off to Mongolia, all our friends ask us: "What is there to see in Mongolia except grass? How can horse riding be fun except whole day on a horse?" Well, after returning from our trip, we shared our photos and experiences with them in complete satisfaction. Our tour guide (Dorjoo), the driver and horseman were all so friendly, dedicated and responsible. This is our first horse riding trip and they guided us so well that we were so comfortable and carefree with our horses just after half day of riding. Throughout the horse riding journey, we chitchat and enjoyed beautiful sceneries as the horse trotted through the grassland; many times we get adventurous and we galloped for a distance. We simply fell in love galloping on horseback…. and the staffs were always just beside me to ensure our safety. We really had an awesome time in Mongolia. Even overnight in the wild land, sleeping in tent, telling stories and joking under the starry skies is a memory that is so unforgettable to us. We will definitely recommend this Mongolia Horse Riding trip to all my friends…. It’s a different experience of a lifetime. We not only missed the vast grassland and Mongolian horses, but also the nature, mountains, lakes, fresh air, and amazing people from Selena Travel.
