Mongolia overview

This is about Mongolia, which is located in the plateau of Central Asia between Russian Siberia and China, Mongolia covers an area of 1.566.500 sq.km, which is roughly the size of Western Europe in which has immeasurable huge grass of steppes, sand dunes, rocky and forest Mountain ranges. The country is mountainous with an average altitude of 1580 meters above sea level, which makes Mongolia one of the highest countries in the world. The lowest point is Hoh Nuur depression at 560 meters above sea level and the highest point is the Khuiten peak at 4374 m. The capital Ulaanbaatar city lies at 1500 m above sea level. The geography of the country is characterized by great diversity. From the north to the south, it can be divided into 4 areas: mountain forest steppe, mountain steppe and, semi-desert and gobi desert. In contrast to most visitors’ expectations, much of the country’s territory is mountainous.

  • Climate: There are four well-defined seasons, and on average, the sun shines for well over 250 days a year. The climate is extremely continental with low precipitation. Average summer temperature is +20’C, average winter temperature is -26’C, average rainfall -200-220 mm. winter lasts from November to late April. Although winter is cold with lot of snowfall, it also has many sunny days. 

  • Ethnic Groups: Mongol (mostly Khalkha) 94.9%, Turkic (mostly Kazakh) 5%, other (including Chinese and Russian) 0.1% (2000) - according to CIA world Fact book

  • Government: Parliamentary republic 

  • State structure: Unitary state administratively divided into 21 provinces and a capital city. 

  • Capital: Ulaanbaatar (population approx 1 million)

  • Economy: It is traditional based on agriculture livestock breeding and also mining (mainly gold, coal, copper)

  • Language: Mongolian Language. Common spoken foreign languages –English and Russian “Khalkha Mongol 90% (official), Turkic, Russian (1999)” - according to CIA world Fact book

  • Health: No specific requirements, all visitors should ensure that they come to Mongolia with suitable medical insurance

  • Insurance: You are recommended to have travel insurance with an insurance company of your country.

  • Food: There are varieties of restaurants in Ulaanbaatar serving Mongolian, Chinese, Russian, European, Japanese, and Korean, Thai and Latin American foods.
