Travel note from Naiman nuur or known as Eight lakes

In August 2016, Office team of Selena Travel Mongolia, visited to the one of the most off-beaten track destination "Naiman nuur or known as Eight lakes" in Uyanga soum of Uvurkhangai province. Let me share with you our travel experience.

We spent 2 full days at the Great Eight lakes to enjoy the pristine nature with the horse ride and some trekking. The national park is located in a high mountains area comprising alpine meadows and forests of conifers (Siberian pines and Siberian larches)

The largest and the most beautiful lake is Shireet, and there are 7 other smaller lakes called Khaliut, Bugat, Khaya, Khuis, Onon, Doroo and Bayan Uul. The lakes are formed behind the volcanic eruptions that occurred all along the centuries. They all connected to each other by underground.

This place was officially protected as a National park in 1992 and it is 2400 metres (1,5 mile) above the sea level and has got an area of 11.500 hectares. Here, you will see 50 species of birds, such as the black-throated loon, great cormorant, bar-headed goose, or whooper swan.

 What to do there:

 We had one full day horse trekking to see all the lakes and another full day trekking through the mountain forest. Furthermore, you can enjoy bird watching, herder family stay, trekking and many others activities. Also staying with herder family and learning about their way of life is something you should not miss.

Why to go Naiman Nuur: 

It was truly a life time yet the most challenging travel experience for all of us. Riding horses through the mountain hills and muddy path while it was pouring a rain. Starting the mornings with foggy mountains but ending our days with the beautiful warm sun etc

This is a place for those who are escaping from the city life and to enjoy the nature in the most remoted areas. 

The weather: 

It is normally very cool and there can be snowstorms in June or August. In the heart of summer, temperatures rarely go until 20°C during the day. 400 to 500 millimeters (16 – 32 inches) of rain fall each year. The eight lakes are frozen from October to May.
