A day with Argali Sheep in Gun Galuut Nature Reserve

Posted by Selena Travel / 03 18, 2024

Selena Travel forged a partnership with the nomadic community and the Mongolian government - a first. Then it established the Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve, creating an environmentally sustainable tourist destination not only to give visitors a sense of life on Mongolia's massive open plain, but to protect the reserve's ecosystem and conserve the area's traditional nomadic culture.

Gun-Galuut Nature reserve, offers an ecosystem diversity although it covers a comparatively small area. The harmonized complex of high mountains, steppes, rivers, lakes and wetlands are well-kept in its original condition. Whoever visits can enjoy seeing Gun-Galuut's vast steppe seemingly meeting the sky, the imposing mountains Baits and Berkh - a home land of rare creatures, Ikh-Gun and Ayaga lakes - a paradise of birds, Kherlen - the longest river of Mongolia and Tsengiin Burd wetland, where water and wetland birds lay their eggs. Gun Galuut is a critical habitat for many endangered species including the Mountain Sheep (Ovis ammon) Argali, Siberian White Crane and White-Napped Crane.

Since the establishment of Gun Galuut Nature Reserve in 2003, Selena Travel has been profoundly engaged in conservation efforts of the Nature Reserve. During the last weekend, in collaboration with the local conservation team and Steppe Nomads Ger camp,

Selena Travel team visited the Gun Galuut Nature Reserve and distributed salt blocks at the mineral lick of Mountain Sheep population in the area. Providing essential minerals for the Mountain Sheep will help them to survive the harsh winter and get into the spring in a better health. On this day, we were lucky enough to sight 67 Mountain sheep! It seemed that they had been waiting for us when to bring the salt blocks.
