Posted by Selena Travel / 03 19, 2024

Travellers often ask “what is the population of Mongolia” and we used to answer “we’re almost 3 million”. Now we’re officially 3 million as Mongolia welcomes her 3 millionth citizen! The important person is a baby girl born in the morning of 24 January 2015 in Dalanzadgad town in the South Gobi. She was born to a young couple by the name of Azzaya & Khatanbold. Congratulations, Mongolia!

Now let’s see how the Mongols progresses as population since the beginning of the 20th century.

  • The Mongols held their 1st capitation of the 20th century in 1918 after they proclaimed their independence from Manch Qing dynasty in 1917. And the population was 647500 in total (542000 Mongols, 100000 Chinese, 5000 Russians).
  • The Mongols held their 2nd capitation of the 20th century in 1935 – it was the first one after the people’s revolution in 1921 when Mongolia reclaimed their independence from China. The population then was 738200 in total.
  • The next capitation took place in 1944 during the WWII, the population reached 759100 in total showing the slowest growth in the 20th century.
  • In 1956 the Mongols used international capitation methods and the population was 845500. The largest population by provinces belonged to Arkhangai (about 60000) province.
  • In 1962 Mongolia welcomed her 1 millionth citizen. Just before the event the country was officially accepted to the UN in 1961.
  • The next capitation that took place in 1969 announced that the population of Mongolia was 1197000 with birth rate of 2.8%. With no war, no conflicts Mongolia thrived as a nation.
  • Mongolia welcomed her 2 millionth citizen in 1988. Birth rate was 2.9% at that time.

And in January 2015 Mongolia welcomes her 3 millionth citizen! Hurray!
